Books by M.S. Merian Online (primary sources)

(This page is work in progress)

In Merian’s time book production was quite different from our times. Today every printed copy is the same. But in her time printers and publishers produced books in leaves and a buyer could decide whether he would let his copy be coloured and what binding he would prefer. So Merian’s books were available for purchase as uncoloured versions or copies hand-coloured by either Merian herself or her daughters. Moreover, Merian used a  special printing technique: contrefaçon or counterproof. These factors cause that copies of Merian’s books vary in appearance.

Some of the books by Maria Sibylla Merian are accessible online on websites of various libraries. We tried to locate as many copies as we could. If you know of a digitized copy that is not listed here, please send a note to the webmaster.

City Library Nuremberg: Influences and Embroidery

In the exhibition 'Maria Sibylla Merian. Flowers, caterpillars, butterflies' the City Library of Nuremberg shows a selection of Merian's work from their collections. The exhibition also pays attention to the natural historians who influenced her, and those who were influenced by her. Additionally, rare examples of Marian's Blumenbuch are displayed. The exhibition also shows how her designs were translated into pieces of embroidery that were used for alba amicorum (“friendship books”). More information (in German) can be found here.
